I found this plain white backpack at Michaels craft store on sale for $5.00. First I soaked it in a dark brown fabric dye mixed with water to dilute the color a bit. Once it dried, I simply hand stitched different trims and cords onto the front pocket, folding the ends of the trim underneath so as not to show any hems. This is a good, "I don't want to turn off my guilty pleasure tv show that I've already watched for the past three hours (parenthood anyone?) but need to work on my blog, so I will just sew while I watch it" kind of project. It's easy to do and really requires no rules. Create a pattern, stitch, and repeat!
I think one of my favorite things about adding do-it-yourself projects to your life is taking a trend or style that you love as inspiration and creating a more cost effective, original piece that you can proudly say you made with your own two hands. It's a good feeling.
What have you restyled/revamped lately?
This is absolutely lovely! Such a great DIY project!

Crafting projects while watching TV is one of my most desirable activities! Add a cold craft beer to the mix = heaven. This backpack is awesome, by the way. Might have to pick me up one at Michael's next time I'm there. My latest re-vamp action was a hamper. Turned out great. http://theskinnyluv.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/that-wasnt-so-hard-diy-painted-ombre-hamper/
ReplyDeleteOh that's such a great idea, love the bag.

I love this! You're so crafty, but it isn't over the top and when I see it, I don't think, "okay, that's OBVIOUSLY homemade." Instead, when I first see the picture, I think, "Wow! Wonder where she got that!?" only to realize you did it yourself. That's amazing! Thanks for sharing and your photography is beautiful. If you were closer, I'd love to book a session with you.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! The store I work at sells JanSport backpacks in a bunch of different solid colors and we're always telling customers things they can do to make them they're own (especially the solid white one).
ReplyDeleteI want to teabag dye it. (:
ReplyDelete...holy crap! I am a backpack lover and this is just beyond amazingly gorgeous and brilliant! I'd pay a lot of money for that backpack! I must try to make my own. :D
ReplyDeleteWowzers! I love it! such a simple but creative idea!!
